Financial aid & scholarships

Fee waivers, sliding scales and scholarships published by the organizations that run these programs — each with who is eligible and the page that decides it. Nothing here is estimated from a family's income, and a program with no aid published simply does not appear. A few are awards toward college rather than help with a program fee; those are labelled College scholarship.

1 of the 138 program in Salem say they offer financial aid or a scholarship, and 10 schemes are set out below.

Financial aid YMCA of the North Shore (Salem YMCA)

YMCA of the North Shore Flexible Pricing

Income-based financial assistance across the YMCA of the North Shore, which operates the Salem Y, that reduces membership and program, camp and childcare fees for families who cannot pay the full rate.

What it covers
A reduced, income-based rate; the Y publishes the income bands but not the discount percentage.
Who is eligible
"We believe that every family & individual deserves the opportunity to enjoy their local YMCA and connect with their community. This is why we offer financial assistance through flexible income-based pricing!" Income-based rates are available to "Households with children, earning up to $140,000 per year" and "Households without children, earning up to $100,000 per year" (effective January 2026). Forest River Pool Pass Financial Assistance

A financial assistance application that reduces the cost of a Forest River Pool pass (youth, individual, senior or family) for Salem households that qualify by income.

Who is eligible
Assessed on "Total Household Gross Income" by household size, using the same published income ranges as the department's other financial assistance application (for a household of one, "Under $28,200" through "Over $70,750").
Fee waiver Salem Little League

Salem Little League Financial Assistance / Fee Waivers

The league's own program that pays part or all of the season registration fee for children whose families have financial hardship.

What it covers
"league fees for the season in question will be paid partially or fully by SLL via a fee waiver"; the limited pool of funding is not permanent and must be re-applied for each season.
Who is eligible
"SLL will not deny any child a chance to play regular season baseball, softball or tee-ball due to a financial hardship, whether it be chronic, short term, or situational." Families must first apply to (and be denied by) the outside grants in Step 1, then seek help from the school's City Connects coordinator (Step 2), then complete the SLL request form (Step 3) with documentation that one or more of these applies: the player is a foster child; receives free or reduced lunch; the family receives SNAP benefits; the family receives housing assistance (Section 8); or the family's income places them at an "Acutely Low, Extremely Low, or Very Low Area Median Income". Players currently in travel ball, club teams or private lessons are excluded.
